Jena, a Hungarian Vizsla, came home with our family from France, where my father
was stationed at Laon Air Force Base in the early 1960's. According to my dad,
he got Jena from another officer in 1962 when she was about a year old. We
returned to the U.S. in 1963, when there were not many Vizslas here.
Jena had two litters of puppies. She was kicked in the leg by my horse when she
was 11, and ended up losing that leg. A couple of years later she survived
removal of a grapefruit-size tumor from her side.
Jena was Human-bilingual, understanding commands in both French and English. Of
course, she spoke "the language of the wolves" too, as anyone who heard her
howling in her old age could tell you.
Jena died in November 1975. She had been a part of my life as long as I could
remember, and was a very special friend to me.
